Hot, Steaming pile of mulch.

I ordered five cubic yards of mulch on saturday that was delivered yesterday afternoon. I was so excited to finally do something constructive in the yard aside from just pulling weeds.

I really had no idea how much five cubic yards would end up being, but it's quite a lot. Especially when you have to shovel it into a wheelbarrow and wheel it all the way across to the other side of the yard.

I wanted it mainly because I have recently ripped out an area around a large tree in the back yard that used to be
completely overrun with weeds and suckers from the tree that the previous owners just let run wild. but I didn't think about what would happen after I cleared the area and exposed all of that lovely soil. Turns out, it was a prime location for baby weeds to start hatching, so I needed to get something to cover the area pronto. (The blue arrow in the photo was to point out a wishing well that had been completely obscured by all of that growth- it was the only "before" pic I could find of this area) The photo doesn't really give a good idea of how large the overgrowth was either- that stuff was about 7ft high. Here is a pic of the area cleared of all weeds and with a lovely brand new layer of mulch. You can see how much of that area was covered up by all of that overgrowth, and that's not nearly the entire area. I spent about two hours yesterday evening shoveling, hauling, dumping and smoothing. That is HARD work, but I loved it. I am thinking of putting a pond over in this area but, I am not sure. Everything I have read about ponds says that this would be a bad location, so I have been thinking about doing a dry creek bed sort of thing instead. Lord knows I have enough rocks- but that's an entirely different rant.
