I am making good progress with my sewing this week and I owe it all to my very helpful assistant Lulu:

She had to get a closer look at my pinning.

One must ensure that my seams are even!

She wasn't sure if I marked my darts correctly and had to go in for a closer look. These thing are easier to see from the underside apparently.

All of this Quality Control is very taxing indeed. She wasn't sure about the fabric choice on this one, but I assured her I had a plan for it and it would work out in the end. It's all about trust.

Slow and steady wins the race.

I am not sure what to think about this...it's like a dream come true: Vosges Chocolate and Bacon Pigs.

graphic

I would really, really like to try this but I am afraid my head would explode from the pleasure.

I just had to expand on theme today when I saw David Lebovitz's Candied Bacon Ice Cream on Not Martha this morning. I have had a very similar recipe for this concept bookmarked ever since I saw it on Gourmet's Diary of a Foodie - a FANTASTIC show by the way - it was inspired by Heston Blumenthal at The Fat Duck, and of course, Dana has a picture of the real thing. Such Goodness.

There is nothing like the sublime satisfaction of a successfully completed home improvement project. Back in August I talked receiving my inherited Frankoma Political Mug collection from mom and while she was here back in October she and I tried to hang the collection but encountered a snag:

graphic

The mugs were to go on the wall in picture b. but after we had done all of the necessary measuring, plotting, planning, stud finding and thinking, I took down the picture that was hanging there and saw that very lovely plug said picture was hiding. "Oh, now I remember why I hung this here. Damn." Project on hold. So here it is...half a year later and I realized that I had another very nice wall space hiding behind the book shelf you see in picture a.

Project resumes. I spent an afternoon clearing and cleaning, huffing and puffing, and with J's help we moved the bookshelf over to the area in picture b. I have to interject for a second and acknowledge that this project would not have gotten anywhere at all without the all-around studliness and home-improvement prowess of my man. So Thank You, Jeffery. The next step was to screw the wood supports in to the studs in the wall:

graphic

At first I was just going to screw cup hooks into the drywall itself and hang the mugs just so, but Mom schooled me in the way of perforated drywall, physics, and the effect of copious amount weight thus explaining that I would have a GIGANTIC hole in my wall and a bevy of broken mugs. So once the supports were hung I painted the screws black, measured and marked where the hooks would be, and drilled the pilot holes. I also had to spray paint 42 white cup hooks black:

And then finally....the mugs were unwrapped and hung:

graphic

Yes, there is one missing. I knew this, and I guess I was under the mistaken impression that I was dealing with complete sets and that one set was missing its mate. As I was unwrapping the newspaper from the mugs I began to realize that not everyone had a buddy and I remembered that Mom had told me that my Grandmother, her mom, started to collect the elephants in 1968 (white one 4th row, 4th column) which was the first year they came out. My mom started collecting the donkeys when they started appearing in 1975 (yellow one 1st row, 4th column) and that the collections where eventually combined and here we are today. To fill in the missing spot I think I am going buy the 2009 donkey (hopefully) from this upcoming election. My contribution to the third generation collective. They print the names of the President and Vice-President on the mug of the election year:

gra[hic

I wonder what color it will be.

**UPDATE**

I had to go back and see what exactly I do have, and what, if anything, was missing. I had arranged them by color, so I didn't really care at the time, but here is the tally:

Missing Years 1968-1993 (Note Donkeys didn't appear until 1975)

1982- Donkey
1987- Donkey
1988- Elephant
1991- Elephant

I am not going to get too worked up about it, I am pretty satisfied with what I have since they are items that were given to me, and not ones that I felt the need to aquire, and really one can only collect so many things that will eventually have to be dusted so I am trying not to give myself more work than I already have. Plus, I noticed that all four of these are available on eBay. You know....just in case.

Well, changes are happening around Casa Mulherin, the most drastic being me embarking on a new job in which I will be apart of a design team. I am very excited and happy about this and of course this also means that I will be actually physically going to a job location instead of telecommuting like I have been doing these past six years. That's six years of wearing sweats and holey t-shirts so suffice it to say that my wardrobe has some SERIOUS catching up to do. I am not a natural shopper. I tend to get frustrated at the lack of things fitting, the price of the ill-fitting items, and the overall pastel color schemes the powers that be decide I should be wearing. Don't get me wrong - I love people who love pink, I really do - I am just not one of those people.

I have a few weeks until I report to work and next week is spring break so I will be converting my office into a sweatshop:

fabric

I have some gorgeous wools, a denim, and a couple of lovely corduroys. I have my skirt sloper completed and between that and Sew U, patterns, and other sewing books I have I am hoping to save myself both money and changing room tantrums. I feel pretty confident because I know that I can sew skirts, and I know that I can do zippers.

I knew Joanns would not have wool, so I went to Canvas Works, (which has GREAT fabric) as well as The Fabric and Clothing Factory (which I had never been in before) and was SO very pleased that these resources are here in Olympia and that I didn't have to drive to Seattle to get decent fashion fabric.

Also in preparing to leave the house everyday I bought a Mr. Bento:

I also got the book, which seems to have mixed reviews, so we'll see. I should have just started with the flickr Mr. Bento Porn group. Tons of ideas there and I love seeing what other people are eating... so many good ideas, I can tell I am going to be on here for hours! Also Lunch in a Box..wow..too much to look at.

If you have a Costco near you and are into gardening I would suggest that you pop over and check out the bulbs and plants they have right now. I got a bag of forty(!) columbine plants in assorted colors for fifteen dollars. Forty! For fifteen bucks! I had to go back and pick up a bag of twenty four hollyhocks (also for fifteen dollars) because I just couldn't help myself.

graphic

Now I just need to figure out where I am going to put them all. I think for the columbines I am going to do two mass plantings of twenty as a border between the shade part of the yard and the backyard garden. Last year I bought a bag of shade plants from costco that had three hostas, three ferns, and two heucheras in it for about the same twelve-fifteen dollar price range. They also had really interesting selection of cannas and other tropicals right now and I just don't think you can beat their prices. I really wish my Costco would have had this dinner plate dahlia collection....I am totally drooling over those.

Remember my foray into vinegar making? Here is the result thus far:

mother

You are looking at my mother. He he he....my vinegar mother. She is quiet and pretty much keeps to herself although her aroma has become quite pungent recently. It's not her fault as I have heard that happens with age. I have asked if she wouldn't mind moving from the corner of the kitchen counter into the closet as her odiferous emissions are a little overwhelming at times. I think this will be better for all of us, as the darkness and solitude is a better environment for fermenting and meditation, and quite frankly it would be nice to have our privacy back.
