I
read in Page
Six this morning that one of the Frontier House participants
has decided he wants to go back to the 1893 lifestyle and
is now working as a ranch hand.
Again,
from Supah,
making your own cosmetics, from makingcosmetics.com.
This is so up my alley. Finally someplace I can buy
Polysorbate 60. Just kidding...I am not even sure what that
is, but it's on sale right now.
and
before I forget...the granola was easy and fabulous. I am
never buying store granola again.

The
Mini
PenCam talk over at notmartha
has whipped me up into a Mini PenCam frenzy. I am dangerously
close to getting one, and the link
that was shared in her comments box about Mac compatibility
is pushing me even more over the edge. Never mind the fact
that I have two perfectly good PC's hanging out right
next to me. Never mind the fact that when I showed J the
Mini Pen Cam, he said: "1.3 megapixels? Unacceptable."
Never mind this is the man that didn't have an email address
before I met him, or cannot figure out how to turn the cable
box/ TV back on when it accidentally gets turned off, or
cannot figure out the DVD remote.
This,
my friends...is the day of granola. I can feel it. Julie
has made TWO batches since my original
post and I am going to attempt my first batch as soon
and I am done typing.

So..now
that I FINALLY have a dresser in my bedroom, I think it
is time to at least start thinking about tackling that long
neglected space. I really like this
swatch of Marimeko
fabric, but the price....YIKES! This could be an opportune
time to try out that fabric stenciling project
I saw on Martha. I think one of the things I like so much
about this fabric is that that patterns are so large scale.
It would be an easy stencil to cut out, that's for sure.

I
had a pretty darn good weekend. We bought a dresser, from
one of those unfinished furniture places. It was amazing
to me how hard it has been buying a dresser. We looked everywhere,
from IKEA (poor construction) to Ethan Allen (horribly expensive).
I know I have posted this here before, but I am too lazy
to find it, so here is a look again at the inspiration
for my dresser's paint job. You may have to "View Larger"
to get a better idea. I painted the dresser with a white
primer, then when that was dry, I rubbed a candle on the
edges of the dresser to indicate the "aged" places.
I then painted the dresser with two coats of a semi gloss
black. When THAT was dry, I took sand paper and very lightly
scruffed the black paint off the the candled edges exposing
the white below. Worked like a charm. The only thing I would
do differently next time is not using a semi-gloss, or at
least putting it on with a roller. I am going to use pulls
similar to these.
From
Supah, (June 21st)...Corkdolls.
We have a butt load of corks. I save every single cork,
and we drink a lot of wine.

I
got the latest issue of InStyle in my mailbox yesterday,
and there is a sachet
featured on one of the pages. It's made by elizabethW.
They are so pretty. I think I have a craft magazine that
has directions on how to make sachets just like that one...I
have to see if I can dig it up. I quite like the bath
pouches as well. What a clever idea. I bought a 50 pack
of white wash cloths at Wal-Mart for like 5$ once that would
be perfect for this.
Whatever
happened to Living
Room Magazine?

I
just got back from the store, where I just HAD to buy a
magazine..I couldn't help it. I bought one called "HomeCrafts"
put out by Family Circle. It's got flowery birdhouses on
the the pinkish cover. Usually that would repel me enough
to not even pick it up, but I remembered that I saw one
of these at my mom's and it was pretty cool. Boy am I glad
I bought it...there is the COOLEST
knitted lamp project in it. I think its' cool anyway..
There
is also a project in the magazine using something called
"Wet-release transfer paper." I tried looking
for it online, but I can't find any...it says it can be
used on metal, glass..all sorts of stuff. Intriguing.

I forgot!
On Saturday, we went to the Farmer's Market, which, is like
my FAVORITE thing to do..I love it so much. I bought some
squash blossoms. Ever since I saw them, (last year) I have
been wanting to make something with them, and I finally
did it. It was a ricotta/jack filling, spiced with cumin
and a jalapeno and chopped tomatoes. There was also a very
yummy fresh tomato sauce that was spooned over the top.
I have a few recipes lined up and we are going to be eating
squash blossoms every Saturday until we get sick of them,
or I run out of recipes. Which ever comes first. The recipe
was from the cookbook "More
Recipes from a Kitchen Garden". I can' t remember
how I got this cookbook,...I think she lived in Santa Cruz
or something. Anyway..it's a great book and I just saw that
Amazon also has the original "Recipes
from a Kitchen Garden". I must add it to my wish
list.
A
couple of years ago I saw Denyse
Schmidt's quilts featured on Martha, and I instantly
fell in love with them. Growing up with a mother that quilts,
it was so refreshing to see someone making quilts that were
funky and modern. I think that I would enjoy making a quilt
like hers. My favorite is Drunk
love in a log cabin. She also has a line of screen printed
items.
Very inspiring!
Check
this out!.....vintage Tupperware lamps!
Link via Glitter.
I
LOVE these stuffed creatures that Anna
Chambers makes...I quite like this little pissed off
Monkey named Goochie.
But my favorite has to be the sad monster Hermes.

Megan
posted this link to Muffin
Films. VERY FUNNY. I am not a super huge fan of flash
cartoons, but these cracked me up. Especially after reading
that they were her masters thesis project. How cool is that?
I just love seeing how someone can be inspired by something
so simple as a muffin. I think my favorite is "Bluebirds
in Spring"
Also,
from Loobylu, check
out S.Britt's FABULOUS
art. I love love love it!

I
want to make some vinyl purses. Like these
from Smoking Lily
or
this
one I especially love from Bust's
Boobtique..
or
my favorite from Queen
Bee Creations via buyolympia....the
vinyl
fish bowl purse. Where does one buy this sort of vinyl?
Anyone?...Anyone?
AND...I
HAVE to get a washboard. Look at these felt
purses. The handle and bag in one piece is genius. I
think the main thing I do not like about my felted bag is
the handle. It's just this long tube/snake of felt sewn
awkwardly inside the purse.
I
am currently obsessed with 1950's sewing patterns. I love
love love those dresses. They are so Audrey Hepburn-ish.
To me at least. I think it's the impossibly tiny waists
that make them so appealing. I love this
page by Mena from
Sew Wrong about using
one of these tiny-waisted vintage dress patterns. I am not
sure if real people are built the way the pattern illustrator
seems to think they are.
Here
is a great vintage pattern
for "Mandarin style lounging pajamas" from Rusty
Zipper. I just love those, and would buy it if the pattern
were my size. It's a great idea though..and I am sure I
can find a pattern to emulate them. AND..I have even seen
frogs at my local sewing/craft store!

Check
this out...a 67$ Do-It-Youself
crocheted bikini kit. 67$?? Jesus.
Recently,
J and I rediscovered the glory that is Costco.
The battle of the parking lot is ALMOST enough to keep me
away from that place, but the bounty that awaits.....well...I
am in love. We are going to go again today to fill up on
filet mingion and ziplocs. That place is magic. Someone,...was
it you Meg? Told me that Julia Child buys her meat from
Costco. I tell that to J whenever we go in there. I am sure
he is sick of hearing it, but I cannot help myself...confronted
with the 10lb package of ground beef, it's the only thing
that pops into my head.
I
am in the process of redesigning my site....I am creating
some snazzy flash buttons, and it's slow going. I also need
to update my links page with all of the wonderful blogs
and sites I have encountered lately...so much to do, so
little time. Oh yeah...and I somehow managed to delete every
single email in my inbox, so if you have emailed me recently
and have not gotten a response, that's why.
Last
night on HBO Comedy, I saw a movie that I had not seen since
my childhood. It brought back fond memories of summer vacations
holed up in my parents basement watching TV all day. No
sports, no girl scouts, no tanning. Just HBO. The movie
was Moving Violations.
It stars John Murphy, Bill Murphy's younger brother,
and Jennifer Tilly as a NASA rocket scientist. Not a master
piece by any means, but I used to love it. Not as much as
the ultimate childhood summer movie, Midnight
Madness. If you have seen this movie, and love it as
much as I do...you are instantly cool in my book.
No further proof required.

I
was informed last week that we employees are going to be
expected to work the weekends all summer long until our
current damn-ass project is finished. *Sigh* I am trying
to figure out if it is worth it, but I guess I need the
money. What a crappy summer.
On
a good note, Shrek was on about a thousand times this weekend,
and boy do I love Shrek. I have the DVD, but the DVD player
decided it was tired of playing the same DVD's over and
over again, and is currently on strike. Thank god for HBO,
HBO Plus, HBO Family, HBO Signature, HBO Zone, HBO Comedy,
HBO Eastern, and HBO Plus Eastern. Perhaps if I did not
have to pay for a million HBO's, I would not need to work
a crappy job. Priorities.

Ah!
Look at this cute little knitted.... uh...cup
sweater? That is so impractical, yet I am oddly drawn
to it. Seeing that cup sweater makes me want to knit little
sweaters for all of my cups. Sorta like the time I saw a
knitted wine bottle cover. It was so horribly awesome, and
when I showed the picture to my wine connoisseur Super J,
he was less than thrilled and completely deflated my enthusiasm.
Poo on him.
I
went to the large corporate bookstore yesterday to look
for my favorite English decorating magazines and they were
not there. I wasted a 30 mile drive. I hate magazine disappointment.
Lucky for me, there was a Metropolitan Home waiting in my
mailbox.

I
have been wanting to make a water garden for my patio out
of a galvanized steel bucket and a few water plants. Nothing
fancy. There is a picture of one in the July issue of Real
Simple and they also show these fabulous glass bubbles,
or Pond
Floats. I WANT!! I especially love the clear
and the ruby
ones.
My
mom gave me one of her old 1970's craft books and there
is a crocheted shawl in it that I am currently making. I
am using not too fancy yarn for the initial run-through,
but if it turns out, I am going to make it using an angora
blend,or something soft and fuzzy and luxurious. Mohair
perhaps?

I
am in one of those "should I cut my hair" quandaries.
I am in the need for something different, but I am afraid
if I cut it to say, chin length, I will miss the long hair
I have been growing for the past 4 years.
I
keep meaning to post this
site I found...I can't remember how I got to it though.
They have the greatest hand-bound books.
Very inspiring.
I
have also been trying to crochet a bikini,
just to see if I could do it. It was sparked by an article
I read in Vogue about this girl, Ambika
Conroy, who taught herself to crochet, and is now making
bathing suits for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit models
for about $300+ a pop. Way to go! Not that I even wear bikinis,
or want to make them for a living...and the only yarn I
have is that horrible wal-mart acrylic kind. That's okay,
though...it made for a fun afternoon while watching the
Star Trek:The Next Generation marathon.
