I have been thinking lately of trying to make a mini-comic. Somewhat inspired by Keri Smith's mini-comics. I also found a great link of Jessica Abel, of Artbabe fame. She has a great DIY section on making comics, and she says that the best way to start is to make a mini-comic. However, she has not updated the mini-comic section yet. I was thinking about one of my greatest influences, and my favorite comic of all time: Bloom County. I can't believe I forgot all about it when I was writing my bio page. I quit reading the funny pages when Bloom County/Outland was gone. There is/was nothing like it. I bought all of the books, and even had a stuffed Bill the Cat. I heart Berekely Breathed.

I love Megan's cupcakes! The little spiders are so great!

I have found the digital camera for me. The Logitech Pocket Digital Camera. I wish that they would make all of these cool cameras Mac compatible.

I was going to write about rice pudding the other day, when I saw that Jenny had posted her recipe. Growing up, my only experience with rice was the Minute Rice microwave stuff that my mom would serve for breakfast with milk, cinnamon and sugar. We were not rice people, we were potato people. I have found the people who grow up eating rice with their meals find this particular dish a little disgusting. So, the point to this story is that J and I were at Costco the other day, and he picked up a pack of Kozy Shack Rice Pudding. I was a little hesitant to try it, but man...I ate the whole thing. This stuff is soooo good! It's similar to the breakfast concoction I grew up with. I think that I will try to make it myself.

I have a cold which includes, but is not limited to, a nasty sore throat. Yuck. The weather down here is miserably hot. Double yuck. I alternate between sweating like a pig, and freezing my butt off from the air conditioner. Perhaps that is what got me sick...all I know is that I will never again live someplace that gets this hot. I feel like drinking tea and eating soup, yet it still feels like popsicle weather.

I purchase the new issue of Living Room magazine. It is definitely different than it's first incarnation. It's more like the other decorating magazines out there, you know, packed full of stuff the average person cannot afford. There are very few DIY articles, and the ones they have are pretty lame. Nevertheless, I will probably buy the next issue. One cool thing I saw in the magazine. Cleaning products by Caldrea. I love the concept and I bet everything smells so good.

I love these! They are on page 12 of the latest Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion. They are made by Bethany Lowe Designs. The website was a little disappointing to me..you can't really see anything. I love them, and I am sure they are easy to make. Next time I am standing in front of the felt section of my craft store, saying "Look at all of the colors! What can I make?", hopefully I will remember these.

I need to make a new banner, don't I?

I could have sworn I wrote about this already...but I guess I didn't. I would like to announce that on September 19th, much to the dismay of those around me,..I will be participating in this years "Talk Like a Pirate Day." Here is a funny article about it by Dave Berry. And to get you all in the mood..here is a pirate joke courtesy of a Glitter thread:

"A scurvy pirate walks into a bar, with a little ships' wheel sticking out of his pants, and orders a glass of rum.

Bartender: Sure, but before I serve you, what's with the wheel in your pants?
Pirate: Arrr! It's drivin' me nuts!!"

HA HA HA!! That cracks me up. I heard rumors that Living Room Magazine has revamped itself and has started to crank out new issues. Seems the format has changed. I must buy and judge for myself.

Weekend update: pretty boring. Highlights include the purchase of a brand new DVD player (yay!), and the long awaited premiere of The Sopranos (yay!), new noisy upstairs neighbors and their loud, thumping bass (boo!) and a bit of work(boo!).

To test the new DVD player, I rented a few DVDs, including Mulholland Drive. If you have not seen it, let me just tell you not to even waste your time. I can appreciate the vision of David Lynch, as he has made some spectacular movies, but being weird just because you can is arrogant and makes me angry. So, if anyone has any idea what that movie was about, let me know.

Last night, in honor of The Sopranos season premiere, I made a recipe I found in a magazine from "The Sopranos Family Cookbook". It was Baked Ziti with Little Meatballs. Very yummy. Also...last season, I remember, the FBI agent they introduced to pose as Adriana's friend was played by an actress by the name of Fairuza Balk. I remember very distinctly thinking "oh wow, SHE'S in this?" Imagine my surprise when they showed "scenes from the last season" and she was replaced by a blond actress. What happened?

Special thanks to Stephanie for pointing me to more Sowa prints. This is the another one used in Amelie.

Also..from from Miss Pixie, September 19 is official "Talk like a Pirate Day." Here is a great article written by Dave Barry about it. I need to bone up on my pirate lingo in preparation. Arr.

A friend and ex-coworker of mine once showed me a book he had about Michael Sowa. If you have seen Amelie, you will recognize his artwork that was used in the movie. (like this) Here is another picture of his that I love. I tried to find more, but since he is a german artist it's a little more challenging. At any rate...I think I need to buy that book, if I can find it. It's so inspiring..it makes me want to paint. I don't know how to paint exactly, that is, I have not done much it so it's a little intimidating. I have been drawing on the computer for so long and I never got around to taking a painting class in school so I am a wee clueless.

The current issue of BUST has a snippet about an artist that I have seen before but forgot about. She makes Damned Dollies. They are great..I love the faces.

This weekend, while on a magazine buying spree, I noticed the cover of a Dwell magazine that tempted me with the line "Make your own concrete countertops!" I am in love with the idea of concrete in the home, and whenever the time comes for me to own/build my own home, I want concrete countertops. Unfortunately, the price of concrete countertops is close to having granite....mucho expensive, so you can imagine my delight at the thought of doing them myself. I was expecting the Dwell article to be a step by step, tips and tricks. Instead it was about a two paragraph write up on this guy, who sells kits for you to make your countertop. A little disappointed, but that turned in to glee when I realized that he knew what he was talking about and even has a book about the whole process.

Is it hot outside or what? I hope it cools down soon..this heat makes me angry.

I have to talk about how insanely excited I was too see Mr. Winkle on Sex and the City this Sunday. When they showed him I about died and screamed: "OH MY GOD! MR. WINKLE! MR. WINKLE!" over and over again. My friend Meg and I have known about the glory that is Mr. Winkle ever since we found out about him while we shared an office a few years ago. I had to explain Mr. Winkle to Super J as he was not hip to the Mr. Winkle jive. I told him about the books, and calendars that showcase Mr. Winkle and J says "and he has toys apparently."

E: "no..I don't think he has toys, he might... but Meg got the calendar for her birthday"
J: "Well that was a toy, on the TV."
E: "No..THAT was Mr. Winkle."
J: "That was not a real dog."
E: "Dude, I swear...that was Mr. Winkle..he's real."
J: "That was not a real dog."
E: "I'm telling you...that is Mr. Winkle.

I then had to show J the website and the movie. They used to have a longer one that was better,..but now you have to buy it (of course).

Take a look at this cute little bag.

That would be easy to make don't you think? I'll bet you the fabric is printed, but you could definitely appliqué and embroider the little fish on. This bag is from Mon Petit Oiseau. Very cute handmade looking clothing. I went to this site after I read about them in Jane magazine...I was looking for the underwear that was featured, but it's not updated yet.
